Following the previous match report of "Bath were good. Bristol were not." Keith is back with the full low down on this week's proceedings...

Bristol 1st XI v Corsham 1st XI, WEPL Premier 1, 19 August 2017
Corsham 145 (29 overs), S Bullen 39, W Rudge 3-18, N Pollard 3-19
Bristol 148-2 (24.1 overs), F Trenouth 75no
Bristol put the previous week’s debacle at Bath behind them and completed a comprehensive victory over Corsham on a blustery day at Failand. The result should, barring mathematical obscurities, leave them safely back in Premier 1 next season, while almost certainly consigning the visitors to at least a year of Premier 2 cricket.
Corsham won the toss and elected to bat but were soon in trouble three balls in when Charley Reed, much to everyone’s surprise, gave a simple catch to Paul Redwood off an innocuous-looking delivery from Will Rudge. Two balls later in an eventful first over the new batsman Ashur Morrison gave a much harder chance to the same fielder in the same position, which he wasn’t able to take.
At the other end, Ralph Hardwick seemed to be troubled by the wind and was not his normal metronomic self, conceding four boundaries in his first two overs. Rudge continued to cause problems, though, and might have dismissed Steve Bullen in his second over, Tommy Probert making a valiant but vain attempt at what would have been a spectacular one-handed diving catch in the gulley. The previous ball Vir Lakhani had conceded four overthrows attempting to effect a run-out at the striker’s end after a slight mis-field.
The Rudge-Redwood combination struck again in the fifth over, Morrison being the batsman who fell to a good catch, once again at midwicket, the fielder having to dive to his left, and when Esau seemed to jump backwards and gave a catch to James Bracey behind the stumps, Corsham were 32 for 3. Ten overs later they had subsided further to 66 for 6, Bracey taking two further catches: a leg-side strangle to dismiss Bullen off Dan Jones, and a straightforward outside edge to remove Sam Collier off Tommy Probert. Bullen top-scored with 39, having essayed an array of extravagant strokes throughout his innings and missed roughly as many as he connected with.
The sixth wicket, that of Will Wales, fell when Hardwick got a paw to the ball, on the bounce, in the gulley and Trenouth, running round behind him from second slip to collect the deflection, flattened the stumps at the non-striker’s end with a direct hit that left the batsman stranded. Arney and Yadav strung together a few lusty blows to take the score to 96 but the former hit a return catch to Neil Pollard and the latter played a shocking shot to the same bowler which brought Trenouth into the action again, taking a well-judged catch above his head at deep mid-on. Dennett, a specialist batsman strangely coming in at number ten, looked comfortable until he was deceived by Pollard and was LBW.
Meanwhile, Vir Lakhani had been reliving his Bath nightmare, conceding seventeen off his first two overs. His third went for twenty, Davies hitting him for two fours and two sixes, but Lakhani did finally have the small satisfaction of bowling him to end the innings.
The Bristol innings was pretty much the Fin Trenouth show from beginning to end, with cameo appearances from Bracey and Lakhani, who made 22 each, and a coup de grace from Gareth Roderick.
Trenouth’s innings of 75 not out took him just 58 balls, and this represented a deceleration in the post-tea session, having brought up his fifty in the penultimate over before the interval off just half that number of deliveries. He rode his luck, as is his way, narrowly evading Esau’s grasp at mid on in the second over, twice edging through the slip cordon, and later skying a ball that fell between two fielders in the extra cover region. But for the rest of his innings he dominated the bowling, particularly during the powerplay, during which he made 42 off 20 balls with a six and seven fours.
Bracey batted as he has all season and looked in control until he unexpectedly hit a catch to backward point. Lakhani grew in confidence throughout his innings and rotated the strike well with Trenouth: after tea, they played risk-free cricket, knocking the ball into gaps and punishing the poor balls as they reeled in the target. Risk-free, that is, until Lakhani was run out going for an optimistic second run on his partner’s behalf. This brought in Roderick with just thirteen wanted, and he brought up the victory emphatically with a ramp-sweep for six of Esau.
So Bristol find themselves third again, though still with fewer points separating them from the relegation zone (22), than from second place (29). They host Bedminster next week hoping to string two consecutive league wins together for the first time since the end of May.
